Today me and the family went out for a little trek around Keeper’s Pond near Blaenavon. The blue sky shone on the still water of the mountain-top pond, the Sugar Loaf stood proudly in front of us, and the mighty Pen-y-fan was visible on the distant horizon. It was awesome!
A few months ago the same mountains were buried beneath several feet of snow!
I just love Wales so much! I haven’t had a passport for over 7 years (because I rarely venture across the Severn Bridge!) and have no intention of getting or needing one. I might sound like a small-town hermit, but I genuinely have no desire to be anywhere else ever! I’m a born-and-bred valley boy with a mongrel Cardiff accent, I was converted in Bala, married a Jack and 90% of my relatives are buried in Aberystwyth! Above all God has clearly called me to preach His beautiful gospel in Wales for life, so I may as well fall in love with my mission field – which isn’t hard to do!
The irony of course, is that Wales is a nation of stark contrasts, and while the breath-taking beauty inspires worship, the painful reality of broken lives all around us must surely drive us to our knees! I don’t just want to love Wales superficially, but sacrificially! I want to pray like the Psalmist:
