Guidance

  • What should I do with my life?
  • Who should I marry?
  • Is God calling me to mission?
  • Which University should I go to?
  • Where and when should I plant a church?
  • What should I invest my money in?
  • Which job should I apply for?
  • How should I respond to the trial(s) I’m facing?
  • Should I go to that party on Friday?

It’s fair to say that guidance is one of the most common issues that I get asked to address by members of my church, young people who I mentor and by my friends in general. Sometimes the answers are very simple:“No, I don’t think you should be a crack dealer!” More often than not, however, helping people to discern the will of God for their life is a complex, time-consuming process requiring wisdom, patience and courage. Being asked to speak into people’s lives in this way is a real privilege, but also a huge responsibility as the implications of conclusions reached and decisions made will often affect the course of people’s lives. However, I take great comfort in the knowledge that God is alive, He is loving, He is actively involved in His world, He has a good plan for His people and He still speaks today.

Therefore it’s my intention to do a short series of posts through which I want to highlight 6 ways in which I believe that God speaks and guides us today. These 6 ways are:

  1. The Bible
  2. Personal Circumstances
  3. Prophetic Intervention
  4. God-given Burden
  5. Wise Counsel
  6. Silence

Hope it’s going to be helpful to you…

  1. We are born in a world of troubles and it said God lifts us up and relieves our distress. We have the ability to make a choice in life maybe good or evil and what we choose will effect others on our way in life. The Bible says my sheep hear my voice, and will not follow another, but are we hearing the voice of God or another. Pope Leo XIII stated he heard a conversation coming from near the tabernacle. It consisted of two voices Pope belived it to be the voices of Jesus and the Devil. The Devil boasted that he could destroy the Church, if he were given 75 years to do so, and he also asked permission for a greater influence over those who will give themselves to my service. To his requests, Our Lord replied you will be given the time and the power. So who can say who voice some people hear?

Jesus’ sheep (people) do hear and recognise His voice and are therefore reassured that provided they walk with Him they will not go after ‘another’. (Why would we when we have all we need in Him?!) There are however as you say many voices from ‘another’ who would distract others away – though these would be unbelievers or ‘rebellious’ sheep. I can’t really comment on whatever Pope Leo claims to have heard (does sound a bit dubious to me though!) However, for those who have trusted Jesus for salvation we can know who it is we are listening to – His voice is both distinct and precious to His people and what He says will never contradict Scripture. So stay tuned for guidance part 1 – The Bible…

  3. Hi Dai i seached on line and found this report, i had it almost right, bet you are jealous as he heard the voice of Jesus (no i am only joking).
Pope Leo XIII’s Original Prayer to St. Michael

On September 25, 1888, following his morning Mass, Pope Leo XIII became traumatized to the point that he collapsed. Those in attendance thought that he was dead.
After coming to consciousness, the pope described a frightful conversation that he had heard coming from near the tabernacle. The conversation consisted of two voices – voices which Pope Leo XIII clearly understood to be the voices of Jesus Christ and the Devil. The Devil boasted that he could destroy the Church, if he were granted 75 years to carry out his plan (or 100 years, according to some accounts). The Devil also asked permission for “a greater influence over those who will give themselves to my service.” To the Devil’s requests, Our Lord reportedly replied: “you will be given the time and the power.”

Shaken deeply by what he had heard, Pope Leo XIII composed the following original Prayer to St. Michael and ordered it to be recited after all Low Masses as a protection for the Church against the attacks from Hell. What follows is the original prayer:
Tell you what Dai if i heard the voice of old satan i drop dead now do you believe the old pope

I think Satan’s voice is heard a lot more subtly than we assume it is. Scripture teaches us that the devil “masquerades as an angel of light” (2Cor 11v14) – that is he looks good and tempts us by making sin look good too. I’m convinced that the voice of satan is more often than not subtle, attractive and very appealing and people who don’t know the voice of the Shepherd obey it without even realising it!! However, I’m not scared of satan’s voice (I have heard it – since becoming a Christian) because I am so confident that He who is in me is greater than he who is in the world!! Knowing Jesus changes everything!!

  5. Hi Dai, well if you hear old nicks voice it proves in a way he is still looking to bring down the church, and leaders. So far looks like he going ok, although the church is still widely used for family cermonies i.e. funerals/weddings, while the population has gone up church attendance is going down.We know the big problems with the catholic church, but we have lots more in others i.e. women ministry, differing approach to homosexuality, allow previously divorced to marry against the teaching of the bible, same sex marrige/civil unions, preformed by lots of Pastors its said to be around 40%, a Vicar just this week been found guilty of conducting hundreds of sham marriages to help illegal immigrants gain residency, a Vicar urging the church to get street wise by encouraging worshippers to sware, claiming Jesus regularly turned the air blue and said he has no problem using the F word in his sermons(reported in the Sun on Sat July 31st) we have millions of athiests in the world and countless millions claim to be non religious, so is he winning the race?? Looks like more and more of us are committing the seven deadly sins of pride, envy, lust, wrath, gluttony, greed, sloth. CU Al may God protect you and yours.

  6. Satan’s not winning anything mate. Jesus Himself taught that things would go this way. Regarding the false teachers preaching unbiblical heresy – I know that you know most of the scriptures that warn us about those guys. And as for satan winning the race, Jesus told us straight in Matthew 7v13-14:

“Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.”

In other words, most people are on the road to hell. Those on the highway to heaven are a much smaller bunch. The only way to get off the broad path to death and start down the narrow path to life is through Jesus (John 14v6) which is why I LOVE Jesus!!!

  7. Well Dai hope you are right, looking at our world he having great results without doubt mans No1 enemy, if you are right about your belief you one day you will connect with God(not to soon i hope) if you and others are wrong, we will simply cease to exist. I read old nick held the honoured title of son of the morning and the name lucifer means bearer of light. And as one of the top guys in the outfit wanted a bigger piece of the action and get the boys to worship him take over as No1, a good plot for a mafia film, be a good way of explaining his exsit from Gods grace. Muslims believe the devil is not belonging to angels. Angels being created by God from light the devil was created from fire, and angels are true & fully God obedient while the devils are God disobedient and are enemies to all mankind. I am obliged for you reply, just may read up a few things in the good book athough i have read it many a time funny how you can read over parts at get another meaning or talking over the bible you remember other things you had forgotten, i.e. God doesn’t accept sin so unlike people fallen angles can never be given Gods forgiveness, and satan in arabic is Sheitan or Iblis(think thats the right spelling. Again my thanks, may God protect you your family and all your followers cu AL.
