Far from being an unhelpful burden or a drain on my resources, I genuinely view all 4 of my kids: Elen, Josiah, Ezra and Anastasia, as precious gifts from God. Each one of them is a living, breathing testimony to the kindness of a loving God who loves family!
We love this Scripture in our home:
“Behold, children are a heritage from the LORD,
the fruit of the womb a reward.
Like arrows in the hand of a warrior
are the children of one’s youth.
Blessed is the man
who fills his quiver with them!
He shall not be put to shame
when he speaks with his enemies in the gate.
And this one too…
“Your wife will be like a fruitful vine
within your house;
your children will be like olive shoots
around your table.
Behold, thus shall the man be blessed
who fears the LORD.”
Michelle often refers to the Hankey kids as our olive shoots. I’m more down with the arrows in the hand of a warrior image myself! Either way, we know that we are immensely blessed by God! There are genuinely times when I look around our dining table, observe all the different characters chirping, screaming, giggling and laughing, and I feel like the richest man alive!
My children are a gift from above. Hand-crafted by God and given to us for our joy. Encouragement and reasons to celebrate can often be hard to come by on the mission field. I have 4 very vocal, very energetic, very obvious reasons to be grateful EVERY DAY!!
Thank you Jesus for such a wonderful gift.
